About Tidings Candle

As we’ve moved into our fourth year in business, we are grateful to our customers! Our company started during the pandemic when some local student candlemakers were looking for upcycled containers. Beachcomber Mary McCarthy thought of using beach-found cosmetic jars and hiding a beach find inside each candle because many people couldn't get to the beach during that year. When's Low Tide was launched in June of 2020, in a batch of around two dozen candles, with the original scents Banana Palm, Peach Bellini and Pina Colada. When the student candlemakers got Covid in December 2020, Mary started pouring the candles herself at home.

In April 2021, we launched our monthly subscription candle, later adding a Marble Mason Monthly candle option and beach finds option or Deluxe option.

In February 2023, we introduced our Tidings candle, a custom candle in which customers can choose their color of vessel to match their homes, as well as choosing their scent and type of hidden treasure.

Also in 2023, chandler Mary McCarthy began hand painting dot mandala tea light beach stones and other vessels, and working with businesses to create custom candles for them.

We have poured well over ten thousand hidden beach find treasure candles and we're proud to be the creator of this original concept and business model. We have always purchased beach finds regularly from countries around the world and in the U.S., and every candle we have ever poured includes beautifully wave-worn sea glass on top of the candle, hidden inside the candle or both, often in addition to a coastal landfill find. Though not always wave-worn, these unique one-of-a-kind treasures like vintage marbles, doll parts and figurines are joyfully collected by our customers.

Each year, Tidings Candle donates proceeds for nonprofit and charitable causes, beginning with the two year nonprofit Beachcombing Center museum exhibit, and including Pride candles benefiting Delmarva Pride and an annual suicide awareness and prevention candle benefiting American Society for Suicide Prevention; in 2023 the proceeds of this candle were donated to 24 families who survived the Maui wildfires in response to reports of the mental health crisis aspect of the tragedy.

We use recycled and biodegradable packing materials for shipping and we create safe candles, using 100% all natural soy wax, all natural cotton wicks and 100% toxin free scent, dye and glitters. Many candles on the market particularly in big box retail use paraffin wax which is made from petroleum and is toxic, as are the chemicals used in most scents and dye. Chandler Mary McCarthy is a chronic migraine sufferer and uses only toxin free candlemaking supplies.

We would like to thank everyone who has purchased When's Low Tide/Tidings candles over the years and supported a small business with a mission of supplying environmentally safe candles that bring moments of joy in finding hidden treasure.

Thanks for keeping the flame alive at Tidings Candle!
